What is Biomass?

Biomass is all organic non-fossil material collectively or put another way, biomass comprises the mass of all biological organisms, dead or alive, excluding the biological mass that has been transformed by geological processes into substances such as coal or petroleum.

Biomass can be considered as a form of stored solar energy, the energy of the sun is 'captured' through the process of photosynthesis in growing plants.

Biomass when burned as fuel for cooking, heat or to produce electricity and heat, is called Biofuel.

Biomass consisting of chaff and animal waste can be used as fuel and referred to as alternative energy, although it can be a polluting one if not used in specially designed furnaces.

Biomass is also the dried organic mass of an ecosystem, products such as grass, trees, scrubs, etc will have a much higher biomass and suitability to converting to biofuel than the animals that consume the products deer, insects, etc.

Planet Earth is basically one large Eco System that if managed properly and the sum of all it’s parts respected will serve man kind well into the future but only if we today are careful to ensure we do not leave a huge footprint behind us.
